About the word unscrambler
A word unscrambler takes letters in any order and finds every dictionary word that can be spelled from them. You do not have to use all of your letters — if you enter seven, you get the seven-letter words and every shorter word hiding inside them.
That is the difference between unscrambling and solving an anagram. An anagram must use every letter exactly once. Unscrambling accepts any subset, which is what you want when you are staring at a rack of tiles or a jumble puzzle where the answer is shorter than the letters given.
Examples
- rueslt
- gives RESULT, RUSTLE, LUSTER and 54 shorter words
- aeiou
- vowels only — still finds AUDIO-less words like the two-letter AI and OU
- str?ng
- the ? stands for any letter, so STRING and STRONG both come back
Tips
- Results are grouped longest first, because the longest word is usually the one you are after. Within each group the words people actually use come before the rare ones, so you rarely have to read past the first line.
- Use ? for a letter you can choose freely — a blank tile, or a square you have not filled in yet. Two blanks is the maximum, matching a real tile set.
- Open Advanced options to force a starting or ending sequence. That turns "words from these letters" into "words from these letters that end in -ING", which is far more useful when you are fitting a word into a board.
Common questions
Do I have to use all the letters?
No. The unscrambler returns every word that can be built from some or all of them. If you need words that use every letter, use the anagram solver.
How many letters can I enter?
Up to 15. Beyond that the number of letter combinations grows faster than any tool can stay responsive, and the results stop being useful anyway.
Which dictionary is used?
ENABLE, a public-domain list of 172,823 English words. It is the list behind many word games, so words valid here are usually valid there.
