Letter Toolbox

About Letter Toolbox

Letter Toolbox is a set of free word tools: unscrambling jumbled letters, solving anagrams and crossword patterns, and finding the highest-scoring play on a rack.

The dictionary

Searches run against ENABLE (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon), a public-domain word list of 172,823 English words. It is the list behind many word games, so a word valid here is usually valid there.

Results are ordered longest first, and within the same length the words that appear more often in ordinary English come first — so the useful answers are at the top rather than buried among rare inflections.

Other languages

English only for now. The tools were built to take more: each word carries its language, so adding one is a matter of loading its word list.

Definitions

Definitions come from WordNet, Princeton University's lexical database, which is free for commercial use with attribution. About 61% of the dictionary carries one: WordNet stores base forms, so inflections like CATS are matched back to CAT and labelled as such.

Scores

Tile values are the standard English sets for Scrabble and Words with Friends. They are face values only — board multipliers depend on where you place the word.
