About the crossword solver
When you have part of a crossword answer, the letters you already have plus the length of the slot are usually enough to pin the word down. Type the pattern the way the grid looks: known letters in their real positions, and a ? for each square still empty.
The pattern c?t means "three letters, C first, T last" and returns CAT, COT and CUT. The pattern _a__e means "five letters with A second and E last" — 125 words match, ordered so the common ones come first.

Tips
- Use ? when you know how many squares there are, and * when you do not. ? is exactly one letter; * is any run of them, including none.
- Underscores and dots work the same as ?, so a pattern copied from another site usually just works.
- Answers are ordered by how common the word is, because crossword setters draw from ordinary vocabulary far more often than from obscure words.

What symbol means an unknown letter?
Any of ?, _ or . stands for exactly one unknown letter. Use * for an unknown number of letters.
Can I search by the clue instead of the letters?
No — this matches letter patterns, not clue text. It is the tool for when you have some letters already.
Are proper nouns included?
No. The dictionary is common English words only, so names of people and places will not appear.
